I live and work in Pretoria, South Africa. The constantly changing interaction between nature and manmade activities in the urban environment fascinate and inspire my art.
I love the wilderness and spending time in the organic places created by animals and plants. Humans have the capacity and the need to create ordered space and straight lines that enable sanitary conditions for human life. Sometimes we forget that we are also biological beings, deeply interdependent on other life forms, from the microbiome that live in us to the plant and animal food that we eat. Humans are not apart from nature.
My interest lies in the interface between the manmade spaces and those created by other life forms. I find cities, especially the city I live in, is an incredibly rich collegial space, a unique urban wilderness. I believe there is a deep, often unconscious need for humans to connect with greenery, to inhale the air produced by plants, soil, bacteria, and spend time observing and connecting with animals.
The art that I make comes from my daily awareness of the lush urban wilderness I live in. As I move through the spaces in my repetitive daily rhythms, I notice small changes and develop a ‘relationship’ with plants, animals and people in my environment. This is the source for my work.
